Broke Silence, Menstruation is not an Ashamed Topic

Updated: Jan 12

Hello everyone, my name is Nannan.

I was very nervous and scared when I first experienced menstruation. Because I did not know much about menstruation before, I felt overwhelmed at the moment, and I was embarrassed. My parents were not around, and I worried I could not handle it well. My classmates do not talk about this openly in school, which I believe is because they feel it’s hard to speak out.

If my period accidentally stained my clothes at school, I would feel very embarrassed. It feels like something that you don't want to be known by others, and I am afraid of being laughed at by classmates or saying I'm dirty in private.

Menstruation is a physiological phenomenon of girls only; I feel furious when boys judge women because it is very disrespectful.

I did not get to know anything about sex education until I got to junior high school. The adults around me never said any relative thing to their child except that girls should protect themselves. Therefore, I would like to see more positive, open, and scientific educational propaganda, including TV programs, to educate or discuss things about sex education.
